Achilles Tendonitis
The condition is caused by inflammation of the Achilles tendon. This structure is a broad, thick tendon that runs down the back of the leg and attaches to the heel bone. Symptoms of Achilles tendonitis are:
• Pain, aching, soreness or stiffness in the back of the leg or back of the heel. Please note that calf may be sign of a dangerous condition called deep venous thrombosis.
• Swelling with a noticeable “lump” in and around the back of the heel.
• Pain when walking up a hill or up stairs
• Redness noted in back heel region. The main cause of Achilles tendonitis is overuse of the tendon. For example, running up a steep heel can place tension on the Achilles tendon. Excessive rolling motion when walking called pronation, is another cause. This condition can also result from a structural problem of the foot such as a flat foot deformity or an abnormally high arch. Treatment for Achilles tendonitis includes rest, ice, elevation, anti-inflammatory medications, heel lifts, orthotics, arch supports and physical therapy
