Bunions
There are usually two components to a bunion deformity. A bunion has a prominent bump on the inside of the foot and additionally the big toe becomes crooked and “drifts” over to the next toe. Bunions can be caused by a number of factors. Tight shoes, pointed toes and high heels can cause bunion problems. As a result more women tend to develop bunion deformities. Other causes include an abnormal foot structure such as a flat foot. Treatments range from conservative to surgical correction. The conservative approach consists of the changing to more sensible shoes that have a wider toe box and lower heel. Orthotics, arch supports, bunion splints and cushions can be helpful in relieving pressure. Surgical procedures involve removing the enlargement and also straightening the great toe to bring it into proper alignment.
