Diabetic Foot Problems Diabetes can often cause serious foot problems such as infection, ulcerations, gangrene and amputation. High glucose levels over time can cause circulation problems in the lower extremities. Additionally, many people with diabetes can develop damage to the nerves in the feet-a condition called -diabetic peripheral neuropathy which can result in numbness, pain tingling and burning in the feet. Without the ability to feel ones feet, diabetics are more prone to injury and infection. Treatment and Prevention People with diabetes must be fully aware of how to prevent foot problems before they occur. The following are guidelines on how to prevent serious foot problems:

• Check your feet daily and see a podiatrist if you notice cuts, sores blisters or redness, corns or calluses.

• Always wear shoes or slippers

• Wear sensible shoes that fit properly

• Apply a good moisturizing cream or lotion to the feet a few times a week

• Cut your toenails straight across and see a podiatrist if you develop an ingrown toenail

• Do not self-treat corns, calluses or blisters and never use medicated pads
