Hammertoes
Occur when the toes become crooked and they tend to “cock-up.” As a result the toe joint becomes prominent and exposed to shoe irritation. People with hammertoes problems are more prone to developing corns, inflammation, pain and redness around the toe joint. Causes of hammertoes include ill-fitting shoes, trauma, heredity and an abnormal foot structure such as a high arch or an extreme flat foot deformity. Treatment consists of the use of pads, strapping, splints, and protective material such as lamb’s wool. Changing shoes to ones with a more rounded toe box can be very helpful. Surgery to straighten out the toe should be considered if pain persists and the conservative treatments are not working. As with any foot deformity, the best treatment is prevention. Proper shoes, orthotics and avoiding high impact activities are important measures in preventing the formation of hammertoes.
