Hope for those with Painful, Numb and Tingling Feet

The condition is called peripheral neuropathy and is caused by damage to the nerves supplying the feet and affects over 20 million Americans.  In most cases neuropathy is not curable, however many new treatments are available which can help relieve the terrible discomfort associated with this condition. Some of these treatments include:

•    Low level Laser therapy which helps stimulate nerve function, relieves pain, increases blood supply, reduces inflammation and stimulates the immune system.

•    High potency nutritional supplements    such as Nerve Health Essential Nutrients-This over-the- counter product contains individually packets with four different supplements in each packet for neuro-nutrition.  Metanx is another option. Metanx is a prescription medication that contains a very potent form of folic acid along with Vitamin B16 and B12.

•    Infrared therapy has also been shown to increase localized circulation and numerous studies have shown it to be helpful in reducing the discomfort of neuropathy.

•    Many new topical agents such as Nerve Health Relief Cream® have shown to be effective in temporarily relieving pain, burning and tingling without troublesome side effects.

•    Anti-seizure medications such as Neurontin and Lyrica

•    Patches applied to the skin-Lidoderm patches and Capsaicin  patches

•    Antidepressent medications called SSNRI inhibitors- such as Cymbalta®

•    Spinal stimulators which help block pain signals

•    Stronger medications for severe neuropathic pain such as oxycodone.

•    Acupuncture and acupressure

Recent clinical trials are encouraging for novel new treatment approaches for neuropathy. For example boutulinum toxin type A, commonly known as Botox®, has shown early positive results although more trials are necessary for approval by the FDA for neuropathic pain.
