Plantar Fasciitis
The condition is called plantar fasciitis and is due to inflammation or injury to ligament, called the plantar fascia, which is located on the bottom of the foot. The plantar fascia helps support our entire body weight. Symptoms include a sharp pain on the inside, bottom part of the heel. Pain is usually worse when taking the first few steps in the morning or when getting up after sitting for a while. Causes of plantar fasciitis include an abnormal foot structure such as an excessively high arch or flat foot can cause this condition. Other causes include improper shoes, over pronation (an excessive rolling in motion of the foot) and certain activities such as jogging on hard surfaces. Treating plantar fasciitis
• Rest and ice—plantar fasciitis is an injury and rest will allow the structure to heal properly
• Night splints—a device worn at night to take tension of the plantar fascia and the Achilles tendon
• Orthotics/arch supports—devices that help re-distribute the body’s weight to relieve pressure from the heel area. They also help realign the foot and control over pronation
• Physical therapy and foot massage therapy
• Stretching exercises
• Cortisone injections
• Proper shoe selection—shoes that have adequate padding in the heel
