Toenail Problems

Toenail Problems:  Fungus toenails appear thick with yellow or black discoloration. These toenails may split and crack and become loosened from the toe. Topical medications such as Mycocide, Nonyx, Tineacide and Tea Tree Oil may be helpful. Oral Lamisil is an effective treatment however there are some side effects associated with this medication.  Ingrown toenails are caused by the nail curving around and penetrating the skin. Diabetics and people with poor circulation are at risk for developing serious complications from ingrown toenails. Ingrown toenails can be caused from an injury, improper trimming of the nail or a shoe that is too tight. Toenails should be cut straight across. If the condition persists or the skin becomes infected, you seek treatment from a podiatrist. It sometimes is necessary to use laser or chemical procedures to help prevent the ingrown toenail from growing back.
