Do you have painful, numb or burning feet?  Take the test...

October 25, 2004

What is the condition called?

It is called peripheral neuropathy and is due to damage to the nerves.  In most cases it progresses slowly over the years and can become extremely debilitating.

How would you know if you have peripheral neuropathy?

At first, you may notice numbness, stabbing pain, or burning in your feet.  It can gradually spread to your legs.  Your legs feel heavy.  You have to drag yourself up the stairs.  You also lose your balance and position sense—you are not exactly sure where your feet are, so you can stumble and fall.

Is peripheral neuropathy rare?  How many people have it?

It is estimated that over twenty million people in this country have peripheral neuropathy.

What causes peripheral neuropathy?

Diabetes, chemotherapy, and alcoholism are known causes.  Surprisingly in over 50% of all cases the exact cause is unknown.

Can neuropathy be cured?  How can it be treated?

In most instances the condition cannot be cured. Recent advances in medicine have made neuropathy more treatable, so patients can have a great deal of relief.  The Foot Pain Center is under the direction of Dr. Marc Spitz.  Dr. Spitz has practiced podiatry in Orange County for the past thirty years. He uses a variety of treatments including Anodyne Infrared Therapy, a new breakthrough approach for neuropathy.  Dr. Spitz uses formulated gels that are applied to the feet and legs for relief of discomfort.  Gait training for imbalance and acupuncture are uses as well.
