The Importance of Nerve Testing Studies in the Treatment of
Peripheral Neuropathy

March 2006

We here at the Foot Pain Center continue to make exciting and important strides in diagnosing and treating peripheral neuropathy.  The most important elements in treating peripheral neuropathy are determining the extent of the nerve damage and pin-pointing exactly which nerves have been affected.  For example, a person with numbness, burning or tingling might have damage to the nerves in the feet or damage higher up—in the spinal cord.  Another person may have nerve damage due to diabetes.

We now use an extremely accurate nerve testing machine that determines which nerves are affected and how badly these nerves are damaged.  This nerve conduction study is done right here in our office.  It is simple, painless and non-invasive.  Results are obtained within five minutes.  Once we know more about your neuropathy condition, treatment will be much more successful.

We remain very excited about our new laser treatments for peripheral neuropathy.  Low level inrared light laser therapy has been shown both to reduce pain, tingling and burning and increase circulation to the nerves.

It is estimated that 20 million people in our country suffer from peripheral neuropathy.  We will keep
you updated with the latest information.
