Marc Spitz Recommends Swimming for Healthy Feet and Legs

October 2007

Hardly a day goes by without someone asking if I'm the Olympic champion swimmer..."Can I see your gold medals?"

It's been fun and sometimes advantageous to share a famous name.  I've even been offered front-row seats and last-minute reservations to booked-up restaurants, simply by answering "Yes" when asked, "Are you the real Marc Spitz?"  (Of course I am real; ask my family!)  I just don't spell my name with a "k."

But Mark Spitz and I do agree on this: swimming is a most beneficial activity, greatly enhancing both cardiovascular and muscle function.

See, water is a great "equalizer."  Exercising in water, a 35 year-old, 250-pound football player has no real advantage over an 80 year-old, 100-pound female - because of the resistance inherent in a water environment and the minimal effects of gravity while in the water.

Water-based exercise is the ultimate low-impact workout, producing only minimal stress on the bones and joints of the foot and leg.  Swimming also benefits the cardiovascular system.  It can help reduce cholesterol levels and lower high blood pressure.  Swimming and water aerobics exercise both upper and lower body muscles.

As with any new exercise regimen, check with your physician first.  If you get the OK, head to the nearest pool.  (Tell 'em Marc Spitz sent you!)
