Swelling

Swelling of the feet and legs, also called edema, is primarily due to a buildup of fluid in the feet, ankles and lower legs. It can also be caused by injury, blood clot, insect bite, medications or varicose veins. Situations that can contribute to swelling including prolonged standing, long plane trips, pregnancy, menstrual periods, obesity and increased age. Treatment depends on the cause of the swelling. Swelling caused by water retention is treated as follows:

• Elevate your legs about your heart when laying down

• Exercise your legs—this helps pump the fluid from your legs back to your heart

• Support stockings can be helpful. Over-the counter stockings tend to be lighter weight and easier to apply. Since they are lighter, they do apply a great deal of pressure and may not be as effective as prescription hose. Prescription hose are heavier and exert more pressure. On a positive note, this is quite helpful in reducing swelling. The down side is that a stronger gradient hose is not as comfortable and can be more difficult to apply and remove.

• A low salt diet may reduce water retention and swelling. Ongoing swelling problems of the feet and legs should be evaluated and treated by a physician. Your physician can do a medical workup to determine the cause of swelling. Certain medication such as diuretics can be helpful in controlling swelling.
